What is a pediatric dietitian — and how is ours different?

A pediatric dietitian is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) with specialized training in children's nutrition, feeding development, and growth from infancy through adolescence. Unlike a general dietitian who may see adults with diabetes or heart disease, a pediatric dietitian understands the unique interplay of development, digestion, sensory processing, and behavior that shapes how children eat.

At Nourished Pediatrics, that specialization goes even deeper. Danielle Zold holds advanced certifications in gastrointestinal nutrition, lactation, and integrative pediatric feeding — and has formal training in the SOS Approach to Feeding and the AEIOU Integrative Approach, two evidence-based frameworks used by leading feeding clinics. Her experience spans Early Intervention, outpatient GI, WIC, feeding clinics, and private practice.

This means that when you work with Nourished Pediatrics, you are not getting a generalist who sees pediatrics as one specialty among many. You are working with a clinician who has spent her entire career focused exclusively on children.

Comprehensive pediatric nutrition care, from birth through college

Every condition your child is navigating has a nutritional component — and most have an internal piece that is not visible from the outside. We work with families across a wide range of complex presentations.

Picky Eating & Selective Eating

Most picky eating is a symptom, not the whole story. We identify what is driving the restriction — gut discomfort, nutrient gaps, sensory issues, or anxiety — and address it at the root.

ARFID

ARFID is not just extreme picky eating. It is a clinical feeding disorder requiring specialized nutritional support alongside behavioral therapy. Danielle is formally trained in ARFID management and collaborates closely with feeding therapy teams.

PFD (Pediatric Feeding Disorder)

When a child's feeding difficulties stem from medical, nutritional, sensory, or skill-based impairments — or a combination — that is PFD. We bring the nutritional piece of this complex diagnosis into clear focus.

Constipation & GI Conditions

Chronic constipation affects appetite, mood, sleep, and willingness to eat. We assess motility, fiber type, microbiome health, and micronutrient status — and build a plan that works well beyond "add more fiber."

Tube Feeding & Tube Weaning

We support families navigating enteral nutrition — optimizing formula and rates, managing the transition to oral feeds, and guiding a structured tube weaning process. High-stakes nutrition care that requires precision and clinical experience.

Food Allergies & Intolerances

Eliminating foods without a clear plan risks nutritional gaps. We create comprehensive plans that maintain full nutritional adequacy while navigating IgE-mediated allergies, sensitivities, FPIES, and other immune-mediated reactions.

Poor Growth & Low Appetite

When a child is falling off the growth curve or never seems hungry, there is always an underlying reason. We dig into caloric density, gut function, energy metabolism, and feeding dynamics to find it.

Starting Solids & Infant Feeding

The first years of feeding shape a child's relationship with food for life. We guide families through responsive feeding, allergen introduction, iron and nutrient timing, and common early feeding concerns.

Nutrition for Neurodivergent Children

Children with autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, or developmental delays often have distinct nutritional profiles. We bring clinical nuance and genuine experience to this population.

Why Nourished Pediatrics is different from a typical nutrition visit

Most pediatric dietitian appointments are 30 minutes, heavily constrained by insurance, and focused on meal plans. We take a different approach — one that looks at the whole child and gives families the depth of support they actually need.

1

We find the root cause, not just the surface behavior

Picky eating, low appetite, and constipation are symptoms. We use functional testing — including micronutrient panels and comprehensive stool analysis — to understand what is actually happening in your child's body before we build a plan.

2

We work alongside your feeding therapy team

We do not replace feeding therapists — we make their work more effective. When a child is undernourished, constipated, or micronutrient-deficient, even excellent therapy stalls. We address the internal environment so kids can show up to therapy regulated and ready.

3

Sixty-minute appointments with no referral required

No prior authorization, no months-long waitlist, no red tape. Our initial evaluation is 60 minutes — enough time to actually understand your child's full picture. Most families are seen within 2–3 weeks of reaching out.

4

Exclusively pediatric — from infancy through college

Every child we see, every research paper we read, every continuing education hour we complete is in pediatric nutrition and feeding. This is not one service among many — it is all we do.

We work with children at every stage

Nutritional needs — and feeding challenges — look different at every age. Our clinical training covers the full developmental spectrum.

Newborns & infants Toddlers (1–3) Preschoolers (3–5) School-age (6–12) Tweens & teens (12–17) Young adults (18+)

You do not need a formal diagnosis to reach out. Many of the families we work with come to us because something feels off — their child's food list keeps shrinking, their pediatrician keeps saying "they'll grow out of it," or they are spending hours each day managing mealtimes. If any of that sounds familiar, a discovery call is the right first step.

Real families. Real results.

My son has celiac in addition to being a picky eater. Danielle did such a great job identifying an individualized, goal-focused approach. She worked with us to get micronutrient testing completed so we could target his nutrition gaps first. My only sadness is that we are doing so well that we have graduated from sessions.

Parent of a child with celiac & picky eating

She gave us a step-by-step plan that helped my son become more comfortable with trying new foods. He added 8 new foods in just the first month of working together. I am no longer concerned about his nutrition. She gave us the peace of mind we so desperately needed to enjoy mealtimes again.

Parent of a selective eater

I had a lot of stress related to mealtimes because of my picky eater. Danielle gave us tips to help him become more comfortable with food and it worked like a charm. My only regret is that I waited so long to reach out to her.

Frequently asked questions

What does a pediatric dietitian do?

A pediatric dietitian assesses a child's nutritional status, identifies underlying causes of feeding or growth difficulties, and creates individualized plans that support healthy development. This goes well beyond handing out a meal plan — it involves understanding digestion, gut health, nutrient deficiencies, sensory factors, and how all of these interact with a child's behavior at the table.

How is a pediatric dietitian different from a feeding therapist?

Feeding therapists (SLPs and OTs) address the behavioral, sensory, and motor components of eating. A pediatric dietitian addresses what is happening internally — digestion, nutrient status, gut health, and growth. These roles are complementary, not interchangeable. When a child's body is undernourished or constipated, feeding therapy often stalls. Addressing the internal environment through dietitian support makes therapy more effective — and vice versa.

Do I need a referral to work with Nourished Pediatrics?

No referral is needed. Nourished Pediatrics is an out-of-network private practice, which means you can book directly — no insurance approval, no physician referral, no formal diagnosis required. Most families are seen within 2–3 weeks of reaching out.

Does Nourished Pediatrics accept insurance?

We are not directly contracted with insurance companies, but we provide a Superbill after each session so you can submit for out-of-network reimbursement directly. HSA and FSA cards are accepted. If you would like to check your benefits before booking, the billing codes are 97802 (initial assessment) and 97803 (follow-up).

What ages does Nourished Pediatrics work with?

We work with children from birth through young adulthood — newborns and infants, toddlers starting solids, school-age children with feeding difficulties, and teenagers navigating complex nutritional needs. If your child is under 18 (or a young adult still navigating a pediatric diagnosis), we can likely help.

What is the difference between picky eating and ARFID or PFD?

Typical picky eating is developmentally normal — most toddlers go through a phase of food refusal, and most grow out of it. ARFID and PFD are clinical diagnoses involving more significant impairment: a shrinking food list that does not self-correct, measurable nutritional deficiency, dependence on specific textures or brands, or interference with daily functioning. A pediatric dietitian trained in ARFID and PFD can help you understand which situation you are navigating and build the appropriate level of support.

Is Nourished Pediatrics available outside of Denver, Colorado?

Yes. Nourished Pediatrics is a fully virtual practice and sees families across the United States. Sessions are conducted via telehealth, making it possible to access specialized pediatric dietitian care wherever you are. If you are local to Denver, the virtual format also saves you the commute.
